Bare Root Plants V. Potted Plants

What is the difference?

Bare-root plants are only delivered in the winter season when they are dormant, between November and March. Potted plants can be delivered and planted all year round (except in frozen ground).

Advantages of Bare-root plants:
• Bare root plants are cheaper plants when compared with pot grown plants of the same size.
•There is often less maintenance once planted for the first few months as they require less watering than pot grown plants.
•They often require fewer fertilisers & fungicides, less water and fuel compared to pot grown plants.

Advantages of Pot Grown plants:
•Pot grown plants can be delivered & planted nearly the all year round.
•Plants with tender roots & larger specimens are often better grown in pots.
•Plants in pots can be kept for months longer if there is a delay in planting.
•There is more of a range to choose from, plants need to be grown in large numbers for bare root plants to be economical.

  1. Very helpful information! I used to live in Arizona and was always looking at different trees to buy. I never knew if the potted ones were any different than rooted.

  2. Brian Duffy says:

I had no idea that potted plants could be offered year round. Great to know! Thanks for the info!

  3. Another very useful post! I thought trees that grew in pots wouldn’t live as long as rooted ones. Nice to know :) .

  4. Wow, I did not expect that the way the plants are planted would affect their pricing. Always assumed that it would stay the same. Interesting post.
