This year at Crowders, we have had the amazing pleasure of becoming a finalist for the 2012 Garden Retail Awards. We are currently listed in the under 3 Million turnover category and the Award Ceremony takes place this evening, Wednesday 7th November in London.

So, What are the Garden Retail Awards?

The Garden Retail Awards are a an excellent opportunity to become recognised and to celebrate our success as a growing business. The awards are also supported by The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), Vice President and Managing Director at HTA Caroline Owen says:

The Garden Retail Awards have a hugely valuable role in recognising excellence and helping continually to raise standards in our industry so that we can compete effectively with ever growing competition.

Garden retailers and our supply side partners are amongst the most innovative in the world and we all can learn from the best.

That’s why the HTA has supported these garden retail awards right since their very beginning and is delighted to do so again this year.

Simply put, the Garden Retail Awards are a great chance to reflect on all of our hard work and dedication!

Crowders News: Our Fight Against Ash Dieback Disease!

Ash Tree in Autumn

As some of you may already be aware, here at Crowders our Nursery has recently come into contact with Chalara Fraxinea, more commonly known as Ash Dieback. Due to the disease, Crowders Nurseries have been forced to destroy 50,000 Ash Trees and legal action is now being taken.

In 2012 Leicester City Council discovered Chalara Fraxinea in a batch of Trees supplied by Crowders and we were contacted by the Plant Health Unit of FERA and nursery inspections took place. Since this time the disease has been discovered in batch of Ash Trees at our Horncastle Site, but not at Woodhall Spa.

Here at Crowders we have continued to cooperate fully with Plant Health inspectors and it has since been discovered that the disease entered the Nursery through a consignment of Ash Trees purchased from J & A Growers in 2007.

Our Managing Director, Simon Ellis says: “If the government had listened to us over Ash Dieback disease in 2009, we wouldn’t have this situation.

“This is our harvest time and they have cut off our income stream… what other action can we take?”

Farewell! So Long, after 44 years of service at Crowders!

W Crowder & Sons Ltd recently said farewell to one of their longest serving employees, Dick Carrot of Horncastle. Dick worked for almost 44 continuous years within the company’s nursery business. At a recent celebratory dinner, Chairman Robert Crowder thanked Dick for his exemplary loyal service and wished him well for a long and healthy retirement.

Dick intends to spend his retirement gardening, fishing and cycling. His real passion is supporting Manchester United Football Club, in fact he’ll probably be spotted out and about enjoying a pint with his mates, chatting about the footy… luckily, there’s no more early mornings!
