What can I use to get rid of cats in my garden?

Unwanted cats in your garden can be a real nuisance especially if the cat isn’t yours! The mess they leave and destruction to newly planted plants can drive people to desperate actions. But don’t panic there is a solution or two available. Cats like most domestic pets can be easily trained. Most chemical solutions work by giving off a smell that cats don’t like whilst some mechanical solutions make a high pitched noise that cats are sensitive too. Often people find the best success by using both methods but patience is the only way.

Growing success cat repellent is not harmful to pets or wildlife and should be scattered over and around the area to be protected. At first the cat will ignore the smell and even be attracted to it but over a few days the cat will find a new place to hang out that is more welcoming and free from smells he doesn’t like.

What slug killer is safe to use around children and pets?

During damp spells in spring the damage caused by slugs and snails can be very destructive. Snails will often nibble through the stems of seedlings and leave them lying on the surface of the soil where they slowly die off. There are many slug pellets and remedies available on the market but the safest product we know to use when used correctly around pets and animals is growing success advanced slug killer which contains iron phosphate - which is an organic compound and breaks down to a plant nutrient if not eaten.

What pesticide can I use on my vegetables?

Insect pests on your prize crop can be a real disaster, and who wants to eat produce that has been sprayed with chemicals? There is a solution that is safe to use on fruit and vegetables and will kill off most insects too. Bugclear Ultra for fruit and vegetables controls greenfly, blackfly, whitefly, scale insect, mealy bugs, red spider mites and other mites. The natural ingredients of Bugclear Ultra for fruit and vegetables is rape seed oil which sticks to the bodies of the insects and suffocates them.  Of course if you’d prefer to keep the insects off in the first place you can use insect protection mesh -made with a fine mesh that is too small for most insects to penetrate but large enough for sun and rain to get through.

How do I kill vine weevil grubs in my pots?

Notches round the edge of leaves and plants that come away from the soil with little or no root is sure to be a sign of the dreaded vine weevil. A female vine weevil can lay over a million eggs in a life time and tend to only come out in the evening while the grubs live in the soil around the roots of the plant making them hard to spot until it’s too late. To remedy the problem simply water on a diluted solution of Bugclear ultra vine weevil killer which will kill off any grubs in the soil and protect your plants from attack from adults for 2 months.

How do I get rid of mildew and sooty mould on my plants?

Moulds such as sooty mould appear as a grey powdery coating and powdery mildew which is similar but white in colour can cause a plant to drop its leaves and on badly affected plants cause death. Moulds are often symptoms of other problems such as green fly or stress from dry soils but can appear on some plants in wet summers. Moulds and mildews are easily treated with a solution of fungus clear or for roses and other ornamental plants and flower you can use Rose clear which also contains an insecticide, killing greenfly and other insect pests.

How do I kill ants in my house?

Ants are amazingly adapted to finding the smallest of crack to crawl through allowing them to enter your home without an invitation! Ants will travel large distances to get to some of the sugary things we have in our kitchens and can be a real pain to get rid of as many solutions stain carpets and fabrics. First once you have removed access to the main supply of food they have been eating such as sugar or syrup tins you can then lay down traps such as the home defence ant stop bait station which the ants will enter and take back to their nests killing all inside. I also recommend spraying surfaces such as skirting boards and hard floors with Home Defence Ant Stop Gun which dries to a clear lacquer killing ants after they have walked over it (always test a small area before spraying).

How do I treat roses for black spot?

Black spot on roses is almost a fact of life as the spores of the fungus live in the air and water so cannot be escaped. Black spot can also be transferred by greenfly which are attracted to roses. To ensure your roses stay clear of black spot spray them with Rose clear early in the season as the leaves start to open; this will protect them for 3-4 weeks. Keep spraying through the growing season to keep them looking great. If your roses are already showing signs of black spot then remove affected leaves or cut back the rose (don’t worry if it’s not the right time of year) clearing any fallen leaves. Once ready, spray the stems and leaves along with the surrounding soil with Rose clear and within weeks your rose will start growing again with new fresh growth.

How do I keep pests off my fruit trees?

Growing your own fruit such as apples and pear can be very rewarding. I remember a childhood of sitting in apple trees in the garden eating them straight from the tree. It is almost impossible to keep apples free from all blemishes and marks like the supermarkets do but the taste of a home grown cox’s orange pippin can’t be beaten. There are a few things you can do that will cut the number of beasties that want to ruin your crop. First spray the tree during early spring before the buds start to open with winter tree wash. Winter tree wash kills over wintering pests and their eggs so will cut down the number of insects on your tree during the season. Secondly hang codling moth traps in your trees that will attract the male moth and trap him in the sticky glue inside stopping him from mating with the female and laying eggs around your apples.
