What is a ‘Cloche’?

French for bell the word cloche is now used to describe plant coverings in many shapes and sizes. Originally cloches where made from glass in a bell shape and placed over plants to protect them from wind, rain, cold and insects. Cloches are now made and sold in various shapes that include tunnels, bells and tents.

Why use a raised bed?

Raised beds can be permanent or temporary, they also provide benefits to your plants and are easier to maintain than large vegetable plots. Raised beds can be made from plastic or wood and offer added drainage to the soil by being higher than the surrounding area which in turn allows the soil to warm quicker. By having clear paths between your crops there is less opportunity for you to stand and trample on seedlings and the paths allow you to control easier as everything Is in arms reach.

What is a cold frame?

Cold frames are great for hardening off small plants ready for life outdoors and can also be used for growing crops such as cucumbers and courgettes. Hardening off plants is the process of gradually acclimatising the plants to the cooler weather by leaving the lid of the cold frame open during the day and closing it at night to protect from the cold and gradually leaving the lid open more and more over a few weeks. This hardening off process using a cold frame prevents young plants from being checked by the shock which slows the growth down considerably.
