Why feed your lawn?

Treating your lawn with lawn feed not only keeps it looking good but helps it recover quickly after summer drought or winter weather has taken its toll. There are many lawn care products available such as the easy to use Evergreen Complete Lawn Food, or the professional’s choice Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn Food and simple liquid products such as Verdone Lawn Weed Killer which is great for getting rid of tough lawn weeds.

We hope to be able to give you a short guide on the range available and when to use them to make you lawn look as good as Wembley!

What types of lawn care chemicals are available?

There are two main types of lawn chemical application available, granular lawn feed and liquid. Liquid lawn food is great for smaller gardens or for using during periods of low rainfall and granular which are often longer lasting and can be applied with a spreader.

There are different types of chemical for different purposes such as Aftercut lawn food and conditioner which can be used directly after mowing, Evergreen autumn lawn food which should be applied in autumn, evergreen complete lawn food which feeds the lawn, kills the moss and weeds. And then there are special treatments for specific problems such as lawn sand which helps control moss and patch magic which contains special grass seeds ideal for quickly covering bald spots.

When should I use lawn feed and weed?

Most lawn treatments can be applied during the spring and although they can be applied during the summer we wouldn't advise it as the lawn can easily be burnt if the lawn food is not watered in well with lots of rain.

If you do need to treat your lawn during the summer use a liquid lawn treatment which will lessen the effects of any overdosing and burning.

If you intend to treat your lawn during the autumn then use a special autumn lawn feed as this will contain lower amounts of nitrogen which would otherwise force the grass to grow soft lush growth which would get easily damaged by the cold.

The main thing to remember is DO NOT apply lawn treatments during periods of drought or frosty weather.

Ideally a lawn would be treated in both spring and autumn with complementary lawn  products from the Scotts evergreen range.

Should I use lawn weed and feed or just feed?

If you have a small lawn with little or no weeds it may be an option to hand weed your lawn but for many people this is simply not an efficient use of time in the garden. Nowadays many lawn care treatments are made with a complete balance of lawn feed, weed and moss killer combined and as these are mass produced tend to be cheaper than most single treatment products, so make more sense to buy.

How much lawn feed do I need to buy?

The amount you need will depend on the size of your garden! To measure your lawn for buying lawn treatment measure the average width and multiply this buy the average depth this will give you the area in meters sq. which treatments are sold in then you can easily work out how much to buy.

What tools will I need to look after my lawn?

There is a whole catalogue of tools available to buy for looking after your lawn but our top 5 are:

Lawn Mower (with roller to give a nice stripe)
