Fine leaved dwarf Perennial Ryegrass, Creeping Red Fescue. Lawn seed with Ryegrass is perfect for lawns that need to be hardwearing as it is a more durable and aggressive grass making it perfect for those of you with children. This particular dwarf perennial Ryegrass in Johnsons General Purpose Grass seed is even finer than the usual ryegrass and is slower growing so does not need to be maintained as often.
Additional Requirements for growing General Purpose Grass Seed:
To create and maintain a high quality lawn use an appropriate seedbed fertiliser before sowing. Once the lawn is established apply an appropriate lawn feed as required and overseed the lawn annually.
What is Overseeding?
Overseeding is sowing new lawn seed into an already established lawn which will keep it green and fuller looking. You should overseed your lawn annually to ensure your lawn stays healthy and looking great all year round.
When to Sow General Purpose Grass Seed:
Sow between March and October. Young grass will appear within 14-21 days under good growing conditions, such as mild and damp. Avoid sowing in extreme conditions such as harsh frosts or periods of hot, dry weather as both will kill new shoots. The ground conditions will need to be warm and damp; do not sow after long-lasting rain as they ground will be too wet.
Generally, the best time for sowing is late summer and early autumn as this is when the ground and weather conditions are usually best.
Sowing Rates:
New Lawn: 35g per sq. metre (1¼ oz per sq. yard)
Over seeding: 25g per sq. metre (¾ oz per sq. yard)
Mowing Height:
New Lawn: When grass is 5-8cm (2-3in) high, cut for the first time. Trim lightly and gradually lower blades to an ideal cutting height of 25mm (1in).
Subsequent Cuts: Mow regularly but try not to remove more than a third of the growth at any one time.
