Plant Food and Garden Fertiliser
Plant food in its various forms is a necessity to having a green and healthy looking garden with more flowers and fruit than possible without feeding. Plant food is available in many different forms such as liquid feeds or soluble plant food that are ideal as fast acting feeds but do not last as long as many of the granular plant feeds. Granular and powered feeds are often longer lasting and ideal for permanent planting situations such as vegetable plots or flower borders. Some granular feeds are even ‘smart’ and release the nutrients held within depending on the soil temperature and moisture levels.
My Rhododendron/Azalea is looking yellow what should I feed it?
Some plants such as Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Pieris and many others are lime hating plants and often turn yellow without extra iron in the soil which is locked up in lime or alkaline soils. For these ‘Ericaceous’ plants you should feed with special plant foods designed for these, look for pink packaging which is often used by the larger manufacturers and the words ‘Ericaceous’ or ‘Acid loving’ when buying these plant foods. Depending on the type of food you buy will depend on the amount and frequency you will need to use the ericaceous plant food.
Fish, blood and bone meal sounds horrible, is it as bad as it sounds?
To be honest! Yes. But it is sure good for your plants. For centuries people have been using this as an organic plant food due to the excellent qualities it possesses. Bone meal is excellent for root crops and root growth while blood is high in nitrogen giving lush green healthy growth. Although there has been many scares in the past and concerns about the safe use of fish, blood and bone so far there has been no health problems and is sterilised to ensure that no bacteria or harmful viruses are present. I would however recommend wearing gloves when handling any plant food.
My shrub/flower/clematis isn’t flowering much what should I feed it?
Although there are many feeds available for flowering plants, one of the best to use that will encourage a plant to flower is Levington Tomorite. The combination of nutrients is perfect to get the majority of plants to flower where many feeds will encourage healthy growth.
My neighbour swears by chicken manure pellets, are they any good?
Chicken pellets are a great soil improver and organic plant food and can be applied around the base of most plants in the garden. However care must be taken with chicken pellets as they are a waste product the nutrient levels may vary from batch to batch and almost always contains higher levels of ammonia and nitrogen which is suited to none flowering shrubs. Some plants such as clematis and wisteria should not be fed with chicken manure pellets as this may cause them to stop flowering.
My local horse stable gives away horse manure so I don’t need to use plant food.
As with chicken pellets, horse manure has its place in the garden but should not be relied upon to feed the whole garden. Firstly horse manure is high in ammonia which undiluted will burn young foliage and plant roots. Horse manure is also high in nitrogen which will encourage lush green growth and fewer flowers if used on its own. If you receive horse manure firstly check if it has been left to rot down for a minimum of one year, if not add to your existing compost in layers between garden rubbish and compost in the usual way. After a year the manure and compost can be safely added to the garden around plants but take care not to add too much around flowering plants.
