Deer-Proof Plants for Country Gardens

Deer are spreading and making themselves at home in many parts of Britain where there is natural cover. Their depredations in gardens which abut on to the countryside are becoming every year noticeable. A rose garden may be stripped of blossom in a night. Young trees may be barked. Some benefit may be obtained by tying brushwood or netting round the stems of young trees.

The only real cure is to erect a 2m fence round the garden, or restrict planting to the list below, though when hard-pressed for food, when snow is on the ground, deer may eat anything. Spiral guards and rectangular tubes are now available and form good protection from smaller deer.
