Plants and Shrubs for Clay Soil

Heavy clay soil is the most difficult of all soils to cope with in the garden. It is useless – in fact harmful – to try to work in it while it is wet. When dry it is liable to crack. It is important to attend to drainage and to add grit and humus to improve texture. It is a good plan to have a supply of loose friable soil at hand when planting, to work around the roots of the new shrubs.

Though they may take a few years longer to grow well in clay soil, shrubs that have been chosen wisely will usually achieve a greater size in time than those on poor light soils.
