Garden Plants and Shrubs for Warm Walls

The keen plants person will want to use warm walls to benefit and shelter semi-hardy shrubs. Shrubs which would grow well in garden along our south and west coasts, or other maritime areas blessed by the Gulf Stream, will need the protection of these sunny walls when grown further inland. Some of the plants shown in this section may not be suitable for training against a wall but will benefit from the extra protection given.

North and east-facing walls also offer some protection. The cool exposure keeps shrubs such as Camellia backward, and thus they may escape late spring frosts. House walls give off a certain amount of helpful warmth. Cotoneaster and Pyracantha remain the most suitable for training and the most successful in exposure.
