Pumpkin: Jack Be Little by Thompson and Morgan seeds a unique variety producing mini pumpkins just 3x2in. Pumpkin Jack Be Little is delicious when fresh picked making one serving each. Just scoop out the centre, steam or bake, refill and serve smothered with butter or brown sugar. Or serve pumpkin soup using the shells as soup dishes. The trailing vines of Pumpkin Jack Be Little produce 6-7 fruits per plant.
Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds mid spring singly 6mm deep in 7.5mm (3in) pots of good compost. Germination usually takes 3-12 days at 20-24C (70-75F).
Growing instructions
Grow on in warm, well lit conditions, and keep well fed. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost. Plant out 4-6ft apart when weather is warm in a warm sheltered spot in full sun and rich soil which has had plenty of well rotted compost dug in.
Aftercare
Pinch out growing tips of main shoots to encourage fruit bearing laterals. Water freely particularly in dry spells. Pollinating by dusting the female flowers with pollen is helpful. Female flowers have a little green fruit just behind the flower. Pick fruits regularly while young to encourage better fruiting. In the autumn harvest remaining pumpkins and store in a dry airy frost free place until required.
