The palm leaf range of tableware from our suppliers offers a range of disposable dishes which are made from natural materials in an ethical manufacturing process.
While the United Kingdom produces mountains of waste from disposable tableware, large amounts of naturally shed palm leaves go to waste in India. The palm leaves used for our plates are a by-product from Areca Palm Trees which are harvested for Betel Nuts. Leaves, which have fallen naturally, are collected, soaked in spring water, heat pressed and shaped and then dried using no chemical whatsoever.
In contrast to some eco-friendly tableware, these products contain no pulp or starch; just pure washed, pressed palm leaf, and so are ready for use from the packet. As no chemicals are used in production they do not add taste to the food. The plates may be used in a conventional oven at up to 180 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes or in a microwave for 2 minutes. They are safe in the fridge or freezer.
These leaf products hold liquids and sauces without losing shape or becoming soggy and they insulate well so that a plate of hot food is comfortable to hold. The material is biodegradable and will compost naturally.
Throwing a party soon? Why not try our palm leaf plates. They make an attractive, functional, eco-friendly fair-trade statement. Each dish looks slightly different because of the natural variation in leaf pattern.
Despite India's rapid development, poverty and lack of employment opportunity remains a challenge in some areas. Our supplier's stated aim is to bring employment to rural parts of India using ethical employment practices, including fair wages and good working conditions. We believe that by marketing this range of palm leaf tableware we are supporting ethical trade and an environmentally friendly manufacturing initiative
