This coastal hedging mix has been specially chosen to offer year round interest such as berries, haws, flowers and autumn colour, as well as being suited to salt laden, windy conditions. A native hedge provides a varied habitat for a great diversity of wildlife whilst being attractive and easy to maintain, and the six species that make up these packs make perfect coastal hedging plants. Each pack will include 15x Hawthorn, 15x Blackthorn, 5x Sea Buckthorn, 5x Dog Rose, 5x Wild Privet and 5x Black Elder bare root plants.

Crataegus Monogyna or Hawthorn is a deciduous plant which flowers from April-May. Its' scented white flowers are followed by red fruit in June and it has dark green, glossy leaves. The Hawthorn will attract wildlife into the garden.

Prunus Spinosa or Blackthorn is a deciduous hedging plant, native to the UK. The Blackthorn produces masses of white flowers early in the growing season which are followed by mid to dark green oval leaves. It produces damson like fruit called sloes, which turn from blue to shiny black. Wildlife is attracted to the Blackthorn, in particular birds who will feed off the fruit and it provides excellent shelter due to the density of its' growth.

Hippophae rhamnoides or Sea Buckthorn is a native, ornamental prickly deciduous hedging plant, with edible orange berries which are very high in vitamins and antioxidants (use in pies, preserves, sauces and juices) and attractive delicate silvery foliage. Berry production requires both male and female plants but the sex is not distinguishable until flowering - male flowers are conical and conspicuous, female are rounder and smaller.

Rosa Canina or Dog Rose is a lovely and popular addition to a native mixed hedge with its' burst of lightly scented pink/white open flowers which are followed by orange/red rose hips. The Dog Rose is very prickly, with a scrambling habit so it forms (or can help to form in a mixed hedge) an impenetrable barrier.

Ligustrum Vulgare or Wild Privet is a very popular semi evergreen/deciduous shrub which is often included in mixed native hedges to give some element of evergreen cover in winter. Wild Privet is very useful as cover in woodland where it makes an excellent habitat, attracting all sorts of wildlife. Birds in particular love Wild Privet berries. It makes a brilliant dense hedge and is fast growing too.

Sambucus Nigra or Black Elder is a deciduous, bushy shrub used in mixed hedging which produces musk scented flowers followed by small, black, glossy fruit, which attract wildlife. However, it is repellent to rabbits which dislike the musky scent.
